Fashion, as any other aspect in history, is cyclical. Everything goes back and forward until the old standards are replaced by new talents who steal the scene as a breath of fresh air. And this is exactly what happened at Fashion Space in every single way.
We began the new year 2019 with two hot designers that were newcomers to the industry; so new what you find on our online gallery is a selection of pieces from their graduate collections. Despina Chatzidakis, from London and Imanol Cruz, from Barcelona.
Despina’s “Off The Wall” collection is a juxtaposition of two radical opposites: the Elizabethan era and downtown New York in the 1980s. Extravagant silhouettes that drink from street styling tips showing the status, identity and rebellious vibe of both scenarios. Directly from their origin in the 80’s, graffitis are taken to Despina’s designs reinforcing the exquisite craftsmanship of her creations. “One of my strengths is attention to detail, I’m a perfectionist and ensure [everything] is of a high-standard”, she tells us. The result is no other than an eclectic and eccentric collection where colour plays a vital role in order to transmit the vibrancy of her oversized, monumental pieces.
More of a psychological work is that of Imanol’s “DISMISS” collection. Always concerned with gender equality, his pieces seem to be a protective yet empowering garment for the woman -or man wearing them. “I loved the idea of a wide structure for the outerwear while keeping thing slim for the interiors.” Suits and masculine silhouettes -a clear reference to one of his icons in fashion history, Yves Saint Laurent- reflect this sense of power and leadership he wants to transmit with “DISMISS”.
Despite these two young designers may look too distant from each other in style, one can combine pieces from both collections into a unique outfit which can reflect their shared vision: the edginess of a look that rebels against the standard and makes you feel strong and stylish.
