I have been a great admirer of the lifestyle label Locaplaya for a few of years now. Based on the island of Tenerife, Locaplaya is truly Canarian, with all creations embracing the Canaries rather than focusing on an individual province or one of the 7 islands.

Each new collection begins with a thought which then, Laura Arteaga Fiero, the creator of the label, transforms into sounds, textures, graphics which are then worked into her fabulous pieces. But the real reason I really love this brand is Laura’s dynamic and eye-catching use of colour. I adore colour, and Locoplaya does bright, bold and vibrant colour in an incredibly clever way. In fact its more creation and message then the season! For example, a favourite collection is Inefable the one inspired by the Bauhaus and Brutalist movement and its design impact on the islands. This particular capsule is timeless for anyone who loves Bauhaus, regardless of its season or year.

Each collection is small and intimate featuring around five or six designs, all of which have been tried and tested by yours truly. Collections are made up of basics such as a skirt and top, a coat, trousers and of course always swimwear and pareos – because Laura is an island girl after all! Sometimes she also creates stunning stand-out accessories such as bags and jewellery and even homewear.

Always keen to innovate and operate sustainably as a brand, Locoplaya recently rethought its retail model and now only produces on demand. Pieces are now only made to order, and although this means that clients have to wait around three to four weeks, it really is worth it! But what is a few weeks in these pandemic times anyway!

Further green credentials for Locoplaya include the careful selection of any manufacturing partner. Her present partner has The Oeko-tex made in green certification . And of course, because the label doesn’t follow trends anything that has been printed in the past can still be worn today and is now part of a limited collection! Locoplaya allows the wearer to mix and match pieces from different seasons .
