Helen Kirkum: reimagining sneakers using waste - MsLupeCastro - Lupe Castro

Helen Kirkum's work is not just about making the most of waste materials, but also involves a whole transformation of them. In this interview I did with her a few weeks ago, we saw how by sewing squares from other sneakers she created a unique material from which she made some fabulous baskets, but what surprised me even more was the transformation into bags, but the highlight and the original product is sneakers made with recycled materials from other sneakers.

The inside, is made from a corn leather lining and the insole is made of 98% recycled material. For the sole they use 30% recycled rubber from a Portuguese factory that makes them.

Another thing I liked about this project is that they also collaborate actively with other brands, so that, they also create a network of support amongst each other.

They have recently started a collaboration with a brand called 'Spirits', which works with waste from the cocktail sector, but they are looking at how to continue working with brands that, although they do not belong directly to the fashion industry, can be incorporated into their ethos and create interesting synergies.

I love discovering brands with such purpose and vision as Helen Kirkum's. What did you think of this sustainable model? Do you know more brands like this? Let me know on my social media!
